A full and remarkable life

Bob Ellis was born on 2 February 1947 to Mary and Albert Ellis and grew up in Park Village, close to Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club. His lifelong love of sport, family, horses and community shaped a full and remarkable life.

After leaving school, Bob began an apprenticeship as a carpenter, but it was horses that became his true passion. After one first riding lesson, he built a lifelong career in the equestrian world through hard work, dedication and natural talent.

Bob became an accomplished show jumper, winning major competitions at prestigious venues including Hickstead and the Horse of the Year Show. His work in racing yards, stables and the wider horse world earned him many lasting friendships and a respected place in the equestrian community.

As his career developed, Bob became a highly respected course designer and builder, affectionately known as “Bob the Builder.” His work took him around the world and to the highest levels of equestrian sport, including Hickstead, Windsor, Olympia and the London 2012 Olympic Games, where he served as Principal Course Designer.

Bob also trained young riders from the Royal Stables of Oman and mentored many young course designers and horsemen, generously sharing his knowledge, passion and expertise. His professional legacy lives on through the many people he inspired and helped throughout his career.

Bob was a husband to Cal, proud father to Mark and a much-loved grandfather to Harry and Martha. He shared football, horses, laughter and treasured family moments with them, taking great pride in everything they did.

Bob will be remembered for his warmth, humour, generosity, knowledge and love of family and friends. He built not only courses, but opportunities, memories and lasting friendships. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
